6 Important R32 Refrigerant Specifications To Note

The R32 refrigerant is on the way to replacing the popular R410A thanks to its low Global Warming Potential (GWP). The EU F-Gas regulations are working toward reducing F-gas emissions by two thirds by 2030.

As a result, air conditioning industry leaders have already started releasing equipment which works with R32. Considering the serious approach given to environmental issues, the family of high-GWP refrigerants are bound to become obsolete in the future.

1) Impressive Energy Efficiency

R32 has a higher cooling capacity than its higher-GWP counterparts do. Air conditioners and other equipment using R32 can demonstrate superior energy efficiency over time. This leads to lower operating costs. The reduction in power consumption is about 10 percent.

2) Zero Ozone Depletion Potential

Today, if a refrigerant has even a slight ozone depletion potential (ODP), they are banned. For example, the once popular R22 has left the market due to its negative effect on the ozone layer.

R32 has a zero ODP, thus complying with the most recent EU regulations.

3) Pure Refrigerant

R32 is a so called pure refrigerant so it has no temperature glide. The product can be transported in liquid and gas form. In case of a leak, the equipment can be directly refilled with the refrigerant without removing the remnants of the previous one.

This simplifies the refill process and reduces the time spent on air conditioning maintenance.

4) Low Toxicity

R32 refrigerant has a very low toxicity rating. Unless directly inhaled or ingested, R32 can’t cause harm to humans or animals. However, caution should still be exercised when handling the gas. Technicians must wear protective gear. R32 should be kept away from food and drink.

5) Moderate Cost

Compared to other low-GWP options available on the market today, R32 is the most affordable. Its moderate price tag and impressive availability have made it a leader among the F-gas phasedown compliant refrigerants.

Even though the new regulations talk about phasedown, not phase-out, the approach may change by 2030.

6) A Slightly Higher Flammability

R32 is a component of R410A. When part of the high-GWP refrigerant, R32 is almost non-flammable. When used on its own, the risk of fire slightly increases. The right approach to handling the refrigerant as well as maintaining equipment can reduce the flammability risk to an insignificant level.
